Shark Dives In Hawaii

By Morten Elm

Hawaii has some of the best shark diving in the world. So if you are on vacation in Hawaii, you can try to swim with sharks there. An experience you will never forget.

Hawaii consists of 132 islands; including Oahu and Maui, which has the best locations for a shark dive. Hawaii is located 2400 miles from the mainland, and the distance creates a very special underwater environment.

About 40 shark species can be found in the water around Hawaii. You can expect to see Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, Reef Whitetip Sharks and Sandbar Sharks; and if you are lucky also Tiger Sharks and even Whale Sharks.

The amazing cobalt blue water has a visibility approximately 200 feet, which makes it some of the best in the whole world. Diving in Hawaii is very special.

An always popular adrenalin-pumping activity is shark cage diving. Hawaii is a great place for this kind of diving (or swimming is probably a better word for this non-scuba diver activity).

Oahu is the place for this shark cage activity. You and up to three other persons are placed in a floating cage. From here you can look the sharks in the eyes from a very short distance.

So if you have never tried a shark cage dive, you should try it, if you are on vacation in Oahu. You cannot know when you get the chance again.

Another place to dive is Maui. The place is considered to be one of the top dive destinations in the world. The island offers a range of diving opportunities including reef dives and dives near volcanic craters.

But the most exciting encounter is certainly the amazing (and very huge) Whale Shark. You cannot expect to see them on every dive trip, because they are pretty rare. But if you are lucky, you can see them when you are diving or snorkeling.

If you do not want to take the risk not to see any sharks, you can instead take a dive in the 750,000 gallon fish tanks in the Maui Ocean Center aquarium. Here you can see 20 sharks, a lot of stingrays and thousands of colorful, tropical reef fish.

So if you are going to Oahu or Maui you can dive with sharks; either in the ocean or in an aquarium. - 29892

Scuba Diving/ Snorkeling: How They Are Basically Done?

By Allyn Cutts

Some of the basic requirements for both Scuba diving / snorkeling don't vary greatly, except that scuba diving is done going deep into the water and snorkeling is done on the surface of the water.

The Newest and Fastest Growing Online Global Community For Scuba Divers

It is necessary to know how to swim to be able to scuba dive and snorkel. To do the BSA swimming test is recommended.

The test starts with jumping feet first into water above your head, leveling off, then swimming strongly for 75 yards. You can do breast stroke, trudgen, side stroke or crawl. Turn and for 25 yards do an easy backstroke. 100 yards must be completed in one swim. Stopping is not allowed. If need to rest, you can have yourself float on the surface of the water.

A buddy system is used for both scuba diving / snorkeling.

Scuba Diving:

Compare your dive plans, check equipment, and check understanding of signs and signals.

Working in water can be dangerous if you are not fit thus a diver needs to be fit and healthy. Have a physical examination with your doctor before any tiring exercise such as water activities.

Snorkeling:

Snorkeling can be a lot of fun and is easy to learn. It will help you build confidence in navigating the waters. Snorkeling is often the first step towards learning to scuba dive.

The basic requirement for snorkeling is a mask, fins and a snorkel. To start with, you could hire equipment from your local club to learn how to use the equipment before buying.

If you are buying, ensure that you buy quality equipment.

A mask, for instance, must fit correctly for comfort and with no leaks. It can be either made of plastic, rubber or silicone. Silicone is more expensive but offers better comfort and durability.

Mask lenses should be of tempered or toughened glass for eye protection and scratch resistant view of the underwater world. It is recommended to seek for professional advice at your sports shop in choosing the best mask. Buy the best you can afford.

To be able to breathe at the surface of the water without lifting your head for breath, you will need a snorkel. Basically, it is a tube with a mouthpiece. Different mouthpieces are to be tested to be able to pick for a comfortable fit. Ask an advice from your snorkeling club instructor regarding mask/ snorkel care and maintenance.

The fins are available in two types. There is the shoe fin and the open heel fin. Again, you will need to test different products for comfort and size.

In warm countries sun skin protection is essential while snorkeling. Use water resistant sunscreen and wear a t-shirt that is UV treated.

In cooler countries, you might like to invest in a wet suit which will provide warmth and protect against abrasions and stings from sea creatures. This would apply to both scuba diving / snorkeling.

Scuba diving / snorkeling can be tremendous fun. Such activities provide a fascinating sight to a whole wonder world and colors of marine life you may never imagine. This would truly be a memorable experience to share with friends and family. Just never forget to observe the basic precautions for safety. Always remember to take a buddy along and should never dive or snorkel on your own. - 29892

Clive Cussler's Spartan Gold

By Britt Hellman

Spartan Gold signifies the launch of a fifth book series by perpetual New York Times bestselling author Clive Cussler, this time in partnership with up and coming young author Grant Blackwood.

Referred to as "Fargo Adventures," the new series is, as the name suggests, based on the adventures of the Fargos, a married couple by the names of Sam and Remi.

Independently wealthy, the Fargos have devoted their lives to their obsessive passion for archeological treasure hunting, and they do not shy away from any obstacles to find what they are looking for.

While the Fargo Adventures feature a new cast of characters and a slightly different action venue - treasure hunting - the telltale hallmarks of a true Cussler-novel that we have all come to love and expect still remain: Exotic cars, foods and drinks, as well as lots of excitement on, in and around water.

In Spartan Gold, Sam and Remi Fargo pursue a trail of clues left on the labels of twelve wine bottles from the lost wine cellar of Napoleon Bonaparte, written in a code they must first decipher.

Naturally, their quest to unravel this mystery does not go unimpeded. Relentlessly on their heels are the hired ruffians of Bondaruk, a former Soviet freedom fighter from an ethnic minority group, who has since turned into a ruthless mafia billionaire.

The treasure at the end of the trail consists of two ancient Greek statues of pure gold which were stolen and hauled off by Persian ruler Xerxes the Great, to be stashed away and forgotten at a hitherto unknown location. Bondaruk believes himself to be a direct descendant of Xerxes and the rightful heir to this lost and forgotten treasure.

The trail laid out by Napoleon through the wine-bottle riddles leads Sam and Remi Fargo from a German WWII submarine in Maryland to Rum Key in the Bahamas and through many European countries, including Germany, Monaco, Italy, Croatia and Ukraine.

To sum it up, Spartan Gold is the first in an exciting new series by the master of marine action novels, Clive Cussler, complete with the distinct hallmarks that we have come to love and expect from this beloved author. In other words, Spartan Gold is another guaranteed New York Times bestseller. - 29892

Snorkeling: Why Part of Scuba Dive?

By Allyn Cutts

What lies beneath the surface of the world's oceans and seas has been a fascination of mankind's for thousands of years. Seventy five percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, and the landscapes beneath those waters are as rich with life and varied as any on dry land. A scuba dive is the way to experience it.

The Newest and Fastest Growing Online Global Community For Scuba Divers

The large bodies of water and the marine life in it are still vastly unexplored and remain a big mystery to mankind. While we are discovering what lies beyond our planet in the stars, we still have to discover everything that's underneath the waters of our own world.

Scuba diving started off out of a desire to unearth the waters and mysteries they hold. The first thing we learn about scuba divers is they don't go very deep below the water. The ocean is filled with so much life it's not necessary to travel very deep in order to see for ourselves the beauty of it.

The majority of marine life can be found within the first two hundred meters of water below sea level. Most of these amazing animals gather within the upper forty meters of water, making it easy for scuba divers to explore and discover them.

Underwater habitats include natural formations such as rocks and coral reefs that protect the vibrant communities of smaller marine animals such as fish from larger predatory animals around.

Snorkeling is a great way to explore these habitats without having to worry about understanding special techniques or carrying heavy scuba dive equipment. It requires no special training. Basically, you just need to know how to swim and to practice breathing through a snorkel. It can be tricky at first for some but it becomes easier as you progress. Then you will be doing it like its second nature.

An experienced instructor will usually give you a few lessons or instructions for safety reasons when going snorkeling. This includes how to use the snorkel properly, basic safety precautions, what you're going to be looking for under the water and basic conservation measures so as not to harm the fragile habitats of the underwater creatures.

It is recommended that you never snorkel alone but rather in a group or with a guide, the same as with scuba diving. Some places and locations require wearing of flotation devices or inflatable vests with bright colors so for easy identification on a scuba dive. It's also suggested these devices be adjustable in their buoyancy to allow for easy inflation.

But, some people choose to snorkel without flotation devices since these can hinder divers from going deeper or free diving to lower depths. On the other hand, wetsuits with proper thickness are recommended.

Suits also provide some buoyancy with the proper coverage and minimal resistance, protecting also against the cold water and allowing divers to dive deeper if they so wish. Keeping safe by having the appropriate pieces of equipment also means the diver enjoys the dive and has time to think carefully about the surroundings. Divers regard the snorkel as part of the equipment for a scuba dive. - 29892

All divers need to understand the dangers involved in staying beneath the surface. It is for this reason divers are taught to be vigilant. They must take careful note of how their equipment operates, changes in the environment and how their buddy is faring. The slightest change should be regarded as potential danger.

A scuba diver must be physically fit. A person who is medically unfit cannot even attempt to dive or do a course. Being overweight is as dangerous as diving alone. Selecting Wetsuits For Optimum Sport Performance

By Clement Call

Not all wetsuits are designed to withstand the same type of movement. Some are built for heavy use of the knees and shoulders while others are more restrictive in the joint areas. The panels that a wetsuit is made from are stitched and glued together, creating more flexibility. Panels that come together in high motion areas can cause additional chafing, which can be very uncomfortable.

When water becomes trapped between your skin and the suit, you may feel a slight chill at first, although it's not the same shock of jumping in unprotected. In a moment, the water that is trapped warms up as an extra layer of insulation, creating additional warmth.

There are numerous different sports that require wetsuits when the water (or the air) becomes too chilly for swimming but you still have enough warmth to keep you in the game. Surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, jet skiing, water skiing and wake boarding, and of course, swimming are just a few of the main sports that will find you picking through your options early and late in the season.

If you live in a northern area you will probably need a wetsuit all year long. A simple shorty or spring suit will most likely suffice during the summer months, but having it can mean the difference between staying on the water for an hour and staying out for three or four hours. If you're in a southerly climate you might only need a light suit or even a skinsuit for much of the year, with a heavier suit for the midwinter months. Most people have more than one suit to help get them through each season.

The different styles offer you different ways to protect your body from the cold. A full suit covers you from wrist to ankle and may even come with a well fitted hood. For additional protection you can certainly add gloves and boots in order to keep all of the exposed skin covered and warmer for your sessions. Wear what is comfortable and appropriate for you and the water temperature.

A shorty is a suit that offers core protection. It has shorts, usually to just above the knee, and short or three quarter sleeves. Using three quarter sleeves gives you the option to pull the sleeves down over the elbow or push them up a bit for more arm movement. Sports like windsurfing and kiteboarding require a lot of arm movement and most people find a three quarter sleeve below the elbow to be constricting.

A "John" or a "Jane" is a suit that offers full leg coverage and core protection while it also allows for total arm movement. It's sleeveless. A light suit like this can be beneficial not just when you need a little bit of lower body warmth, but can come in handy when stinging nettles take over the water.

You will probably need more than one style and one weight when it comes to the perfect suit. You will have days when a shorty is perfect and then there will be days when a heavy, thick full suit with a hood is called for. Having multiple options extends your season and your session options. With every suit, you have to ensure that you have chosen well and have a back up on hand. Participating in a water sport with a suit that is too light can hamper your ability to perform well and can hamper your ability to swim to safety if needed. - 29892

Scuba Diving Tours

By Owen Jones

When it comes to scuba diving, many swimmers are misinformed. They think that you have to be a competent diver and a strong swimmer to enjoy underwater swimming.

However, this is simply not true, although before you go scuba diving in the open sea, it is sensible that you have some fundamental knowledge of diving and good swimming skills. However, you do not have to be an experienced diver. After all, everyone has to go scuba diving for the first time.

Scuba diving is a pretty self-explanatory activity really. Scuba divers can be seen in many movies and in many amusement parks. While the general idea of scuba diving is the same everywhere in the world, what you will see underwater is not. There are a number of underwater animals and plants that can only be seen in certain countries. This is one of the reasons why you should book a scuba diving voyage carefully.

In Thailand for instance, scuba divers are often able to swim with porpoise and sea turtles. This alone is worth the cost of scuba diving for many people. Aside from swimming with aquatic animals, you can also spend your scuba diving vacation examining life and the surroundings undersea.

Just a few of the many marine creatures that you can easily see in Thailand are giant lobsters, electric eels, sting rays and a large number of different kinds of fish. The fish found in Thai waters are very diverse because of the incredible environment they have there, which includes natural reefs, sandbanks and wrecks..

Maritime creatures are unquestionably the most exciting part of scuba diving, but there are also other submarine activities in which to participate. For example, many scuba divers enjoy diving along coral reefs. Coral reefs are not only home to a large quantity of marine animals, but they are also great to explore. You will find it stimulating swimming around the many different shaped reefs.

Having said this, unless you are an experienced underwater diver, you should go scuba diving with a trained professional. These professionals are most commonly found by means of scuba diving tour groups. Scuba diving tour groups can be found all along the coast of Thailand. Scuba diving is a prevalent pastime among foreigners in Thailand, so you would be astute to book your scuba diving trips well ahead of time.

As well as booking a scuba dive with a trained diver, you can also take scuba diving lessons at most coastal resorts in Thailand. Many of these places also offer guided tours. Scuba diving lessons are obtainable as group lessons or private lessons. Private lessons may be a little more costly, but many first time scuba divers find them worthwhile, in more ways than one.

To find guided tours designed for scuba divers, you can ask in local sea front bars, at your hotel reception or at the nearest tourist information office. Whether you have already selected your destination or not, you will easily be able to uncover local underwater tours or lesson, especially in the more popular Thai cities like Pattaya and Phuket. The things that you will see underwater will make your holiday even more unforgettable and make you wish you had started years previously. - 29892

Occupations in Deep Sea Diving

By Owen Jones

Have you ever considered an elite occupation? If you have, then you may have a lot of different careers in mind. If you enjoy scuba diving, then you may be asking yourself what kind of career you can get from scuba diving aside from being a scuba diving instructor. Apart from just being able to explore the ocean, you will see that there are occupations that entail deep sea diving.

There are a lot of occupations that involve deep sea diving. One such occupation is that of being a commercial diver. This kind of diving requires a lot of bravery and stringent qualifications.

Deep sea divers are implicated in a lot of sorts of work. One is salvage operations on sunken ships, while others include the decontaminating of the hulls of ships. Deep sea divers are also required on deep sea oil rigs to weld pipes underwater as well as clean steel.

There is a wide scope of projects that require commercial divers. However, training is very rigorous because you will have to deal with hazardous materials undersea, such as high explosives and you will be in dangerous situations too. In this regard, commercial divers are distinctive from average recreational divers, because they are well-trained in all aspects of diving safety to the point that everything they do undersea should be just right.

So, how does one become a commercial diver? First of all, you have to recollect that commercial diving is different from recreational diving. Having an open water qualification is simply not adequate for you to become a qualified commercial diver. You still have to go to train for this type of employment.

In commercial diving school, you will be taught all about dive tables and how to use them. You will also be taught about undersea welding and how to handle high explosives underwater. Safety is the most significant aspect of commercial diving.

You will also be instructed on undersea communications and emergency safety procedures in case something goes wrong. In commercial diving, you will also learn about the dangers of working underwater, particularly in deep diving, where nitrogen narcosis is very common. You will also learn about the symptoms of nitrogen sickness or bends and how to detect if a fellow diver is suffering from nitrogen narcosis.

You will also be taught about the different air mixes necessary to diving, such as air, nitrox, and trimix. This is important as you will be breathing it undersea. Using the wrong mix when you go deep sea diving can be fatal.

Commercial diving is a promising occupation that is full of adventure. The pay is one of the best in the world and you will also be able to utilize hi-tech scuba diving equipment, such as rebreathers, state-of-the-art undersea scooters, undersea radio communications, as well as hi-tech industrial tools.

Deep sea diving occupations, such as commercial diving is a rewarding occupation. If you have the courage for it and you want a occupation that is full of adventure, then commercial diving is for you. Just remember that in deep sea diving, safety must always come first. Remember these things and you can be sure that you will be able to have a wonderful and fulfilling occupation as a commercial diver. - 29892

Important Parts Of Wetsuits To Use

By Clement C.

If you are interested in water activities it helps to look into wetsuits for your needs. However no two wetsuits are alike. It will help to watch for various parts of wetsuits. These parts can be very important for various different water activities.

First you will need to take a look at the neoprene that is used in a wetsuit. It is used so that the user can stay flexible in the water. When looking into a wetsuit you should check out the neoprene content that it has. Some suits have full neoprene content and can cover the entire body. Some are also thirty percent suits that cover the arms, back and shoulders.

Neoprene can also handle water very well. Water should be able to be properly repelled by the neoprene. When this works the suit will be able to keep water from getting into one's suit. As a result the body will be able to stay warm.

Each wetsuit will have a different thickness level to it. It helps to watch for the thickness with regards to the two numbers that is used. The first number deals with suit thickness in the torso and the second deals with the limbs. For instance, a 4/3 suit is four millimeters thick in the torso and three millimeters in the limbs. Remember that different thickness levels work for different wetsuits.

It is also helpful to watch for the temperature that the wetsuit will be used in. Different thickness levels are best for different water temperatures. A rule of thumb is to use a thicker suit for colder water. An example is to use a 3/2mm suit in sixty degree Fahrenheit water. By using a suit that is appropriate for temperatures it will be easier to keep comfortable.

Seams on a wetsuit can vary and different types are recommended for different temperatures. There are some forms of seams that can be used for different types of wetsuits. Flatlock seam stitching is commonly used for warm water conditions. The seams are built in a flat feel and are comfortable but water can get through in some cases.

For colder temperatures the use of sealed seams can help. With these types seams are glued first and are then stitched. Some seams in this case are taped together in the inside. This option is one that will keep from getting water to move into the suit.

Zippers can make an impact on the build of a wetsuit. The length of the zipper will be important to watch for. Shorter zippers will help to make the suit more flexible. They can make it harder for a person to put on a suit though. The barrier used around the zipper should be considered too because it will need to keep water out.

When checking out wetsuits you will need to look into these important qualities. You should watch for how the suit can handle water through its neoprene. The thickness of the suit and the seams used are also important. These are used to help you with getting the best experience in the water. - 29892

My Favorite Maldives Holiday - The Bandos Island Resort

By Shelley Swartzer

I have visited 8 Maldives resorts in the past 6 years and I have now been to Bandos twice and I can honestly say that I shall be going back! I have tried to present an objective overview in this article for anyone considering visiting it, or who is not sure which island to choose.

Bandos was closed during 2005 being practically rebuilt, the resort that is not the island, and reopened as a new resort. The resulting resort is magnificent in my opinion. Being in close proximity to the capital Male makes the transfer to Bandos by boat short and sweet, which makes it very attractive to many holiday makers who don't wish to board a seaplane to visit some of the more remote islands. The resort has great facilities and is also very family orientated, resulting in what has become a very popular resort in the last few years.

As well as the sheer beauty of this island, the food and service here is top class. One of the focal points of the resort is the lighthouse restaurant, which has a white peaked spire, making it the only building on the resort that doesn't have a thatched roof. You will see the lighthouse in most of the marketing pictures for this resort.

The other restaurant is the Cayenne Grill which prepares a range of meat, seafood and vegetarian options to your own requirements and presents this at one of the individual thatched pavilions at the waters edge.

There are 3 different category of room on the resort, as is typical with most Maldives island resorts - water villas, Baros villas and the Deluxe villas. The attention to detail and the workmanship is second to none, and walking into these rooms for the first time makes you feel good about arriving - always important for me. There are designer fittings, concealed plasma Tv, quality coffee maker, and more importantly for me, a well-stocked wine cooler.

Every room in this resort is just a few strides away from beach or lagoon and each has a large decked verandah complete with a daybed. Combine this with the 24 hour room service and the well stocked wine cooler, and its not surprising that many guests stay put by their rooms for days on end.

With a fine and easily accessible reef encircling most of the island the snorkeling is really good here on Bandos (yes I am actually writing this while on the island)!. The PADI dive school is very friendly and offers open water courses and beginners can try an introductory dive in the lagoon. There are more than 30 dive sites you can visit from Baros and with several trips per day even the most avid divers have plenty to go at. There is a Marine Biologist on hand to provide talks and accompany the snorkeling and diving trips sometimes to chat about the local marine life for those who want to know more.

All in all you really are hard pushed to beat Bandos island for a rewarding tropical getaway. - 29892

Bandos Island Resort - Maldives Holiday Packages

By Andrea Gail

Bandos island resort had refurbishment during 2005 which saw it not only receive a stylish face lift but also extend its exiting facilities and add extra accommodation.

The new look and feel of Bandos is a pleasant balance between formal and casual and it has very much retained its Maldivian charm with thatched roofs etc. Some of the accommodation in both the standard and junior class areas have interconnecting doors for families who find themselves split between several rooms.

The bar area and other amenities are well-placed near the water, and the bar is often busy until the early hours of the morning. The restaurants, while not particularly inspiring in their decor, do serve a range of quality dishes.

The resort has made a lot of effort to look after and cater for visiting families, providing a purpose-built childcare facility with female staff on hand to look after the children and also provide babysitting in the evenings. So even with the kids along you can still enjoy a romantic break.

There are 84 standard rooms which lie on the beach side. There are 48 Junior suites at Bandos, arranged in groups with a shared garden. They are ornately decorated, with a yellow and ochre color scheme, solid wood four-poster bed and a sense of style that make them very accommodating.

Bandos is a center point for diving in the Maldives, boasting a decompression chamber among its many facilities. The dive center here is both a Platinum Facility of the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers and a PADI Gold Palm Resort.

You can expect a special event if you plan to get married on Bandos, the ceremony is held on the beach of one of the uninhabited islands in the atoll ? Kuda Bandos ? and is followed by a private cruise for the newlyweds on a Dhoni (Maldivian boat). - 29892

Proper Knife Selection

By Ben Vinson

The knife has come to symbolize to the modern man, the essence of survival and the ability to provide all that is needed for survival with one simple and lethal tool.

A knife should be able to protect you well, build you a haven, and keep you alive. They should be multifunction.

A few generations ago, maybe even less than a hundred years ago, men would not leave their house without a proper knife, it was only common sense to take a knife with you wherever you went.

You never know into what situations you will run into, you may get lost and need to survive for a couple of days in the wild or be surprised by an enemy or thief and need some sort of protection.

Of course, no knife can be that perfect to fulfill all your needs. But you can sort up things and set standards for what you want a knife to employ. What is important for you may be different from those of others.

It is not only the extra features of the knife that matter, it is also the way the knife itself is crafted and what it is made of.

Living in the current situation where bringing knife anywhere can be considered as criminals or at least lead to illicit actions, we mostly need one only when we leave the town to spend days in the nature. Nature is a wild world. And we need knife to protect us in case something unexpected happen.

In any case, when you are out camping, hiking, fishing or diving you will probably consider buying yourself a knife and you should think about what you need before you even set foot in the shop.

Now that you know the type of activity you will go for, you should buy knife appropriately. Think of the possible dangerous actions you will need to do in regards to the activity. The knife you buy and bring should meet those needs.

Knife is a major tool for survival in the wild nature. Make sure you know specifically which one to buy. Look for more information and reviews on Internet to start your search. - 29892

Maldives Resorts Are Threatened By Sea Level Change

By Sarah Brooke

The Maldives archipelago consists of around 1200 islands covering an area of approximately 800 kilometers in the Indian Ocean, and they are generally thought to be some of the most beautiful tropical islands on our planet. These islands, and indeed this country, are threatened by rising sea levels since they are all only a couple of meters above sea level.

Even a small increase in sea levels, eg. half a metre would relinquish many of the islands back to the Indian Ocean, and make pretty much all of them virtually uninhabitable. Maldives islands such Bandos island, Baros island, Filitheyo island and Kuredu island which are popular destinations for thousands of visitors each years may be lost to the sea within a matter of decades.

These islands are not only threatened by sea-level rises however, they are also under threat from ocean warming. Coral reefs are very sensitive to change in temperature and warmer oceans would destroy these reefs that play a significant part in protecting islands from wave erosion.

Whilst global warming has tended to be a point of conjecture among environmentalists, the unprecedented event of the rapid melting of Arctic sea ice in 2007 has caused many environmentalists to agree that warming is not only inevitable, but is happening more rapidly than was originally suspected.

In 2008 a leading climatologist, James Hansen, published a research paper which demonstrated that the actual safe limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was at most 350 parts per million, anything higher than that causing significant negative environmental effects globally. We have already reached that level with the current concentration at 390 ppm and rising.

It isnt only the Maldives who are rightfully on the verge of panic, countries like Bangladesh are already suffering saltwater flooding as sea levels rise and engulf low-lying land; Australia is experiencing severe droughts year after year as its climate changes, and forests across western North America and suffering from to pest insects that are multiplying in the warmer climate.

The fact that many countries are already suffering the effects of global warming is probably the main reason why no one is totally happy with the recent pledge of the G8 nations to take steps to try and restrict temperature increase to 2 degrees and atmospheric concentration of Carbon Dioxide to 450 parts per million. A few years ago, these levels might have been realistic but current scientific findings indicate that they are out of date.

Later this month, over 100 world leaders will meet at New York for the United Nations Climate Change Summit. On 24th October 2009, the Maldives will hold the largest underwater political demonstration in history with snorkelers and divers taking banners down to the coral reefs as a reminder to everyone of what is at stake. We cannot be really how long it will be but it seems inevitable that holidays to the Maldives may be over in the future. - 29892

Things to do in Belize

By Deb Corbeil

Belize City is known as one of the most dangerous towns in Central America, according to some guide books. Most people use it as a quick stop before heading off to the beaches, or cruise passengers simply spend their time shopping in the terminal or heading off on an organized tour.

Whatever your vision of Central America is, check it at the door before entering this beautiful and welcoming country. Many travel guides will tell you to "get out of Belize City and head for the islands." It is too bad really, because they are causing people to miss out on meeting the very proud and helpful citizens of this vibrant town.

Belize is steadily growing as a popular stop for Cruise liners. The terminal is one of the nicest buildings in the city filled with shops and eateries. Passengers rarely leave here unless they are running off on a tour to see the sites. It is too bad for Cruisers, they never really see the real Caribbean cities that they visit. Each Terminal looks and feels like the last and yet to walk around the downtown area, you will find a unique energy and vibe.

Belize has an eclectic mix of architecture. In the 16th century it was settled by the English and the buildings reflect that era. There is your typical colonial architecture, you will see churches and modern buildings are starting to crop up. There is a wide variety in Language as well. The official language is English, but if you listen to conversations, people speak with a mix of Creole. They also speak Spanish, Mayan and German.

After soaking up the culture and cuisine in the country's largest city, catch a water taxi to head out to Caye Caulker. For $10, you will be transported to paradise. Far less crowded than its overdeveloped neighbor Ambergris Caye, this little island is a gem of a destination.

Far less developed and existing quietly with nature, Caye Caulker is a nice alternative to the busy and touristy Ambergris Caye. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the island and thankfully there aren't any plans for resort development in its future. Rates are still quite reasonable and you will enjoy relaxing the day away.

While there, you have to take in the sites and the number one excursion is to hire a guide and boat to take you out to Shark Ray Alley. Located 1 mile from shore is the Belize Barrier Reef. A protected marine preserve for since 1996, it has a healthy stock of marine life and coral. The highlight of the trip however is having the chance to swim with a group of nurse sharks and manta rays that inhabit the reef.

Many divers in the world travel to Belize for one reason only, and that is to dive the famous Blue Hole. Jaques Cousteau introduced it to the world and it is an awesome site. A collapsed cave in the middle of the sea attracts divers that want to go deep. Drop down to 150 feet and dive under overhangs as hammerhead and reef sharks swim in the chummed waters above. This dive is not for new divers.

You don't just have to go out to the Cayes to dive and snorkel. Sail boat trips are popular as well. There are several places to go to and why not explore some of the other surrounding islands. Walk down the main dirt road of Caye Caulker and you will find companies offering up excursions and ideas.

Dining is high on everyone's list when traveling and Caye Caulker has its fair share of restaurants. There is jerk chicken, fresh seafood and western flare. After dinner stop in at a beach bar and enjoy a cocktail as you look out over the Caribbean Sea. You won't find crazy nightclubs, but you will find a great bar to listen to music while you relax in the islands.

Belize is certainly full of many more sights. It boasts rainforest's and islands, and the largest cave system in Central America. It is teeming with wildlife from Howler Monkeys to Jaguars. Like its surrounding neighbors, it has Mayan Ruins scattered throughout the country for you to enjoy and beautiful beaches can be found everywhere, the best being in Placencia on the mainland.

It won't take long until development catches hold in Belize and it turns into another Cancun. Unfortunately, that is the way of the world. So don't wait, visit Belize today and get to know the people of this laid back country filled with beautiful scenery and breathtaking views. - 29892

By Randy Rushmore

If you are planning on going anywhere near the sea for your vacation this year, it may be worthwhile buying an underwater disposable camera. This kind of camera is specifically designed to be used only once and then thrown away. In this respect, it makes it a fantastic option for that quick break or exciting sea adventure.

Most of the disposable cameras for use under water can be used to a depth of 50 metres, which is as much as some of the proper cameras that you can buy. Therefore you can still take some great pictures under the water and have lots of memories to take home with you. It is a common misconception that these cameras are less durable and are of low quality that ordinary cameras. This is in fact untrue in most cases; there are plenty of these types of cameras that can do just as good a job as regular cameras.

One of the best places to find an underwater disposable camera is on the World Wide Web. There are many providers to be found on the internet and many give you savings if you buy in bulk. This may be a worthwhile venture if you would like everyone in the family to have their own underwater disposable camera for the trip.

It is also easy to buy an underwater disposable camera in many local stores. You can even grab a good one on your way to the airport or the harbor. They really are one of the simplest products to use but they come with full instructions just in case.

They are perfect options for the children to use whilst on vacation. These cameras are designed to be sturdy and are not adverse to being dropped or knocked. Some are bulky looking but are deceptively lightweight. They have buttons that are easy to grip so they are a great choice for wet hands. They are bright and cheerful which adds to the pleasure of using them.

The main advantage of an underwater disposable camera over others is that it can be used on dry land as well as in the water. Whereas some waterproof digital cameras will only work best in the sea, you can get some high quality pictures of the beach or landmarks from the disposable range.

Of course, you may wish to consider purchasing a proper digital camera. To ensure that you choose the correct type it is worth reading waterproof digital camera reviews that can be found online. The Ins and Outs of the Waterproof Camera

By Randy Rushmore

If your life revolves around the sea or you would like some lasting vacation memories with a difference, perhaps you should think about purchasing a waterproof camera. No matter what aquatic activities you like to do, having a waterproof camera can create some lasting memories which can be shared with the ones you love. You do not have to be a professional photographer to enjoy this kind of activity and it is a great way to take home some snaps which will amaze your friends and family.

There are many types of cameras to choose from, all with varying styles, shapes and sizes. You could pick one with a wide lens to give a landscape feel to the picture; or you could go for a zoom lens model that helps add a sharper and focussed quality to the photo. Many people opt for a digital camera nowadays but disposable waterproof cameras can still be bought in many places.

If you are serious about underwater photography, you may wish to invest in a good diving camera. Generally, an effective diving camera is one that will work at least 40 metres under the water. Some of this kind of equipment can be expensive but as long as you look after it correctly, it will last you a long time.

For both a waterproof camera and a diving camera, it is possible to buy protective covers. These are predominantly made from plastic or vinyl and are designed to protect the camera from accidental damage and the effects of salt water.

The average cost of a quality waterproof camera is somewhere in the region of $200 but you can find some good cheaper models. Attachments and accessories can be bought and are particularly appealing to those who are serious about underwater photography.

After you have chosen and purchases your camera, it is vital that it is kept in tip-top condition. If you fail to maintain the camera it will not last as long as you would expect it to. One tip is to rinse the camera with non-salt water as soon as you come up from a dive. This prevents the salt from the sea water damaging the camera.

If you have a camera that loads film, be sure to open it very carefully to ensure that water does not enter the film chamber.
