Scuba Diving Mask: How To Find a Great Mask

By Bryan R. Richardson

Taking a few moments to prepare a new scuba diving mask will help to eliminate any fogging problems. A great money-saving way to prevent fogging is simply to use a few drops of baby shampoo and smear it around the inside lens of your mask. This is a very effective, and superior method to prevent fogging than to spit in the mask, which can promote bacterial growth.

Among the first things to invest in when purchasing scuba gear is a dive mask. Although it is possible to purchase masks from many retailers, this is not the product to cheap out on. Don't purchase an inferior mask, thinking that it will be adequate for your needs, even if you are a beginner diver. Nothing is further from the truth. A mask made with safety glass lenses is better than one made with plastic lenses.

Choosing the right scuba diving mask can make your diving trip a pleasurable experience rather than a miserable one. If your mask doesn't fit properly and is constantly leaking and fogging up, it has the potential to ruin a long-awaited diving trip. If you are purchasing a new mask, one way to check if it fits you properly is to slip the mask on loosely, then bend your head forward and inhale. The suction created by this manoever should be enough to keep the mask in place. If it does not, keep trying them on until you find one that fits you well.

Buying a premium scuba mask and caring for it properly will ensure the longevity of the mask. There is no point acquiring costly scuba gear but skimping on the quality of your mask. If you are constantly battling a leaking mask, your dives will be shorter and so will your temper. Remember to always inspect your mask before leaving on a diving trip. You'll find nothing more annoying than arriving at your destination only to discover that the rubber strap that holds your mask in place has rotted through.

Scuba diving masks are designed both to protect your eyes from the sting of salt water and enhance your vision underwater. Wearing prescription eye wear need not be a hindrance to diving. You can purchase dive masks with prescription lenses that allow you to take in all the underwater flora and fauna and not miss a thing. With a prescription mask, you don't have to worry about fitting a mask over your glasses.

It's simple to care for your scuba diving mask with some fundamental upkeep tips. Store your mask lenses down in a plastic case to avoid scratching and to keep the silicone skirt that forms the seal around your face from becoming warped from exposure to sunlight. Sometimes your mask may come with a protective coating, which may be removed using a soft cloth and a non-abrasive toothpaste. This should only be attempted with glass lenses, not plastic ones. Always test a small area of the lens to guarantee that you are not adding scratches if you need to do this step. Always rinse your mask in plain water after a dive, especially if you have been diving in salt water.

One area not to compromise on diving equipment is on your mask and fins. A scuba diving mask composed of high-quality components keeps water out and prevents fogging. As for fins, a good pair of fins will keep your legs from becoming quickly tired. For the mask style that keeps out leaks the best, choose a goggle type with separate lenses for each eye, and also has a silicone skirt to keep out any water. When choosing fins, opt for a closed heel design if you plan on dives of any significant lengths of time. - 29892

Beginners Guide To Scuba Diving Gear

By Brett Camron

When it comes to scuba diving the most important thing is the training that you have, the next most important thing to that is the gear that you will need to have. Everything that I will cover here will be essential if you plan on making some deep dives.

You will need a good quality scuba diving mask, and if you plan on diving deep you better make sure that it is able to handle the pressure of the water at the depth you will be diving. Masks can be cheap, but if you are a serious diver then you would be better to invest in a high quality one.

Bouyancy compensators air in letting the diver going up, down, or just staying neutral in the water during a dive. They also provide the tank attachment, along with diving gauges and oxygen regulators. For divers they are referred to as a BC, and they are absolutely essential when it comes to diving.

You will also need to invest in a wetsuit if you plan on scuba diving. Wets suits will provide you with warm protection from cold waters, which will come in handy when diving in deep waters. When fitting for a wet suit you must make sure that it fits on you snug for it to work like it is supposed to.

Scuba tanks are the life of your dive, and they come in two different main types, which are aluminum and steel. Most tanks are rented from scuba shops, as you will need a diving license to get them filled with oxygen, and also to rent them.

Diving fins will help you swim through the water with ease, because they make more resistance in pressure when you are kicking, causing you to move smoothly through the water. Every scuba diver or snorkeler should have at least one good pair of scuba diving fins.

Diving computers will let you know a large range of data that you need to know when on a dive. Some of the things that dive computers will tell you are water temperature, depth, how much air is in the tank, a decompression meter, how fast you can safely ascent, along with many other things. Dive computers can be worn as a watch or attached to your BC.

There are many other types of scuba diving gear that you can also have like diving gloves, cameras, ropes, weight belts, dive flags, knives, bags, custom gauges and so much more. The number one thing about diving is safety, it is highly recommended that you take some diving training courses and become certified before attempting a dive. - 29892

Book Review: Arctic Drift, a Dirk Pitt Novel, by Clive Cussler

By Britt Hellman

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels often focus on one or more current geopolitical events. The latest one, Arctic Drift, is no different, centering on a worldwide financial crisis in 2011, coupled with global warming woes.

The villain this time around is a Canadian billionaire named Mitchell Goyette who is publicly admired for his green industry empire. However, covertly he is heavily invested in the dirty oil and gas industries.

South of the Canadian border, the United States faces a financial crisis of unequaled of proportions, a crisis intensified by the looming boycott of the U.S. by the international community if the country does not cut its greenhouse gas emissions from coal burning and automobiles.

The American president in 2011, when the story takes place, plans to use natural gas from Canada to replace both coal and automobile gasoline, thereby killing two birds with one stone. The nation would make huge savings by cutting down on expensive oil imports, and simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions by burning a cleaner fuel.

However, Goyette is in a perfect position to take advantage of the United State's desperate gamble, and he does so without conscience. To the Canadian public, Goyette is an environmental hero who invests millions in wind power and carbon sequestration. Unbeknownst to the masses, he's unscrupulously involved in every dirty industry that will make him more money, in particular the oil sands of Athabasca, Alberta, and the Melville natural gas fields of the Canadian Arctic, over which he has full control.

With one hand, Goyette makes a deal with the U.S. government to supply nearly limitless amounts of natural gas at market price from the Melville fields to help solve the American energy crisis, and indirectly the financial crisis. But with his other hand, he secretly strikes a deal with the Chinese to instead sell them all of the gas from Melville at 10% above market prices, with no intention of honoring his agreement with the American government.

(In reality, it seems a little farfetched that the American government would not have had an iron-clad, legally binding, written contract in place for a deal of this magnitude and importance. But it makes for a good story.)

Even so, the backstabbing of the United States as a business-partner is the least of Mitchell Goyette's shenanigans. He also bribes high ranking Canadian officials, creates toxic waste that kills wildlife and people, pays to have property stolen or vandalized, and for his opposition to be assassinated.

The only fly in Goyette's ointment goes by the name of Dirk Pitt, Clive Cussler's action hero of 35 years. In the end Pitt prevails over Goyette, and multiple crises are averted.

Arctic Drift is a seamless joint effort between Clive Cussler and son, Dirk Cussler. It is difficult to tell their penmanship apart. Whatever sections of the book were written by Dirk Cussler, he did an outstanding job of emulating his father's inimitable style. (Oxymoron intended!)

Arctic Drift is a thrilling read in classic Clive Cussler style. You will not be disappointed. It may not be the edge-of-your-seat non-stop action from cover-to-cover as in some of the older Cussler works, but it's still an exciting, intriguing and brilliantly written story that keeps your attention and makes you want to keep reading. The thugs are as smart as they are sinister, and the heroes as pure as Arctic ice. - 29892

Dive With The Carnatic

By Ned Middleton

Sha'b Abu Nuhas is one of those Reefs that, to put it simply, is in the wrong place - as many a ship's captain has discovered to his cost. It is a prime example of a Coral Reef that barely reaches the surface and, from a distance therefore, is not easily seen at all.

Today, of course, there are radar reflectors and small solar-powered lights situated on top of the Reef - and all regularly maintained in the most difficult of circumstances, but one hundred and thirty years ago things were very different.

Unfortunately, at least as far as shipping is concerned, Abu Nuhas lies right at the very edge of the busy shipping lane called the Straits of Gobal. This is the southernmost end of the Gulf of Suez - where the north west Red Sea begins to narrow. Even today, these are hazardous waters - imagine how treacherous they must have been at night without any form of warning light.

The Peninsula & Oriental Passenger Steamer "Carnatic" was built by Samuda Bros of London and technically described as an "iron framed planked passenger steamer of 1776 tons." Her dimensions were 294.7' x 38.1' x 25.4' and in addition to her square-rigged sails, she was powered by a single 4 cylinder compound inverted engine producing a very handsome 2,442 HP - also built in London, by Messrs Humphrys and Tennant.

The Carnatic was launched in December 1862 and, after successful sea trials, was registered by P & O (though that abbreviation was not used in those days) in the March of 1863 before sailing for Calcutta on June 27th.

For most of her working life, P & O employed the vessel between Suez, Bombay and China and latterly she had been the proud command of Captain P. B. Jones - one of the ablest officers of the company. - 29892

Shark Diving In Australia

By Morten Elm

Australia is probably not the first place that comes into mind if you think about swimming with sharks. But actually Australia is a great place to swim and dive with sharks.

You can do everything from a simple one-day aquarium shark dive to a several-day live-aboard shark diving tour. You can also do cage diving in Australia.

Have you always wanted to try scuba diving among wobbygong sharks and grey nurse sharks? Then you should head to South West Rocks; voted as one of the ten best scuba dive sites in Australia. The area is rarely affected by current and you can dive close to steep walls to an average depth of 30 meters.

But the greatest thrill of them all is a great white shark dive. And you do not have to go all the way to South Africa to do it. This special kind of scuba diving can also be done in Australia.

It is possible to go on a great white shark diving expedition from Sydney. But Adelaide and Port Lincoln in South Australia is more popular departure points from tour dive sites with great white sharks.

Those two places are the main departure points for live-aboard great white shark cage dives. From here you head out into the clear blue waters of the Southern Ocean to the Neptune Islands. The main attraction is the great white shark, but you will also see many bird species, dolphins, thousands of fur seals, and the beautiful and rare Australian sea lion.

So if you are on vacation in Australia and you have never tried a cage dive among great white sharks, Australia is a great place to try it for the first time.

If you like to do a more easy and convenient shark dive, instead you can do an aquarium shark dive. In Australia there are several places like Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast, where you can swim with sharks in aquariums.

If you are not a certified diver you will normally be offered and introduction to diving in a pool (certified divers can skip this part). After the introduction to diving and the sharks, you can start the actual shark dive in the big tanks of the aquarium. Sometimes you can even feed the sharks. If they like, your family and friends can watch the dive from outside.

So if you think a great white shark dive is a little too thrilling and difficult, an aquarium shark dive is a great way to see those amazing animals close up.

If you are going to Australia, you can have a great shark dive; no matter if you choose the ultimate great white shark dive or a more normal aquarium shark dive. - 29892

Shark Dives In Hawaii

By Morten Elm

Hawaii has some of the best shark diving in the world. So if you are on vacation in Hawaii, you can try to swim with sharks there. An experience you will never forget.

Hawaii consists of 132 islands; including Oahu and Maui, which has the best locations for a shark dive. Hawaii is located 2400 miles from the mainland, and the distance creates a very special underwater environment.

About 40 shark species can be found in the water around Hawaii. You can expect to see Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, Reef Whitetip Sharks and Sandbar Sharks; and if you are lucky also Tiger Sharks and even Whale Sharks.

The amazing cobalt blue water has a visibility approximately 200 feet, which makes it some of the best in the whole world. Diving in Hawaii is very special.

An always popular adrenalin-pumping activity is shark cage diving. Hawaii is a great place for this kind of diving (or swimming is probably a better word for this non-scuba diver activity).

Oahu is the place for this shark cage activity. You and up to three other persons are placed in a floating cage. From here you can look the sharks in the eyes from a very short distance.

So if you have never tried a shark cage dive, you should try it, if you are on vacation in Oahu. You cannot know when you get the chance again.

Another place to dive is Maui. The place is considered to be one of the top dive destinations in the world. The island offers a range of diving opportunities including reef dives and dives near volcanic craters.

But the most exciting encounter is certainly the amazing (and very huge) Whale Shark. You cannot expect to see them on every dive trip, because they are pretty rare. But if you are lucky, you can see them when you are diving or snorkeling.

If you do not want to take the risk not to see any sharks, you can instead take a dive in the 750,000 gallon fish tanks in the Maui Ocean Center aquarium. Here you can see 20 sharks, a lot of stingrays and thousands of colorful, tropical reef fish.

So if you are going to Oahu or Maui you can dive with sharks; either in the ocean or in an aquarium. - 29892
